was curious what the Marauders were and.
Tumblr media
huh.
honestly I've never read or even SEEN HP so idk what's going on
**massive harry potter spoilers ahead**
hello! sorry this took me so long i went to answer you and then completely forgot to post it. also i may over/under explain things, idk how much of the series you know so sorry about that.
also this is really long, theres a tldr at the end if you want
basically in the books theyre mainly only mentioned through Snape's eyes (and snape is a racist terrorist who created torture spells - dont listen to snape stans they havent read the books) so the marauders are presented as "bullies" that used to hex people for fun.
ill admit, james potter (harrys dad) wasnt a great guy when he was younger and did take it out on snape a bit, but we're only really given the worst bits, and obviously snapes memory will have exaggerated it a bit.
the marauders were james potter, sirius black (harrys godfather), remus lupin (harrys 3rd year defence against the dark arts professor) and peter pettigrew (a traitor prick).
Voldemort (aka Tom Riddle) leads the Death Eaters, a terrorist group based around blood supremacy (hating wizards that have non-magical/muggle family members, especially parents, and arent 'pureblood' wizards), and the marauders and their friends joined the original Order of the Phoenix, lead by Dumbledore (hogwarts headmaster) against the death eaters in the first Wizarding War. Snape was a death eater, but later joined the Order as a spy for Dumbledore.
Regulus Black, Sirius' younger brother, gave up his life to help take down Voldemort, by stealing one of his horcruxes (an item that contained part of voldemorts soul, keeping him immortal) and as a fandom, we generally bloody love reg.
**this is where the spoilers start**
Peter Pettigrew, who was Wormtail in the Marauders due to his animagus (animal you can turn in to) being a rat, was part of the Order but also secretly was working as a Death Eater spy for Voldemort. As a fandom, we generally hate the bastard and wish he died sooner.
There was a prophecy made about Voldemorts death, that seemed like it was about James' son Harry. so James, Harry, and harrys mum Lily went into hiding to protect themselves.
(its worth mentioning that Lily was muggleborn - her parents werent magic - and snape had ended their 'friendship' while they were attending hogwarts by joining the death eaters, terrorising other muggleborns and then calling lily a slur. he claimed that he loved her and its supposed to be his turning point that he reveals he was secretly good bc he loved lily, but he didnt he was creepily obsessed with her. again, dont listen to the Snape stans)
lily and james made pettigrew their secret keeper, meaning peter was the only person who could tell people where they were, and peter told voldemort
voldy then came to their house, killed james and then asked lily to move out of his way (Snape had made him promise not to kill her, snape didnt give a fuck about james or harry though). lily didnt move, and sacrificed herself to protect her son. this act meant that when voldy tried to kill harry, the spell backfired, killing voldy instead of harry, and accidentally created another horcrux inside of harry. harry had a piece of voldemorts soul inside of him.
anyways harry goes to live with lily's sister and her family, and theyre incredibly abusive, and then the first book starts when harry is 11 and gets accepted into hogwarts, finding out that he's a wizard and all of the horrid shit that happened to his parents. snape hates him because harry looks exactly like james did and reminds him of lily.
sorry this was so long
tldr; we mainly see the marauders through the eyes of the terrorist group that they fought, so they look like 'bullies' but actually snape was a prick. the fandom is composed of people who know this, and most of the canon isnt relevant to us.
thanks for giving me the opportunity to write this, i enjoyed explaining it far too much :)

i have seen complains and posts about “gabe is abusive in the show, abuse is abuse!” (summarized, simplified)
and ya’ll are right about that! gabe is abusive in the show!
but, and sorry op im using your post but i think it examplifies this pretty well, abuse is not interchangeable
(also, before going further, lets take a moment to remember this is fiction, so i will be talking about it that way. some things may fit well transposed to reality, some not)
the particular ways in which smelly gabe is abusive has particular effects on sally and percy, traumatizes them in particular ways, influences their thoughts and words and actions in a particular way
in the show, id hesitate to even call this guy a title such as smelly. and op examplifies these differences well, like how in the books smelly gabe being a drunk affects percy in a way, and in the show that does not seem to be present
i feel this whole thing with show gabe not being smelly gabe is not about him being “more” or “less” abusive, bc it’s true, abuse is abuse and show gabe is abusive, but the thing is not the “amount”, it’s the particular ways
physical abuse is not the same as verbal abuse is not the same as economic abuse is not the same as other types of abuse, etc. are they all abuse? do they all negatively impact the victim? are they all traumatizing? yes, yes, yes. but they are not the same
and specially from a story-wise perspective, changing one thing for another, when one thing had very particular effects on the characters and therefore also the story, and how the characters react to the going-ons of the story, abuse is not interchangable
idk how else to put it, im not that good with explaining stuff, but it feels like while show gabe definitely is an abusive prick, he is just that. an abusive prick. not smelly gabe. you could have told me “this is buster, he is another abusive jackass who happens to abuse sally and percy” and it would have had the same result
what i’m getting at is, show gabe sure is an abusive guy, but his character doesn’t have the story impact he did in the books, which feels rather dissapointing when you go into the show expecting a “faithful adaptation” of the books.
something that is to further flesh out in another post, but kinda fits here as an example: show gabe feels like just a abusive guy and not smelly gabe in the same way that show sally feels like a bamf mom but not sally jackson.
anyway, to allow myself to enjoy this show and get past my dissapointment in some things (most of which i blame on the fact the fad nowadays is having tv shows as short as possible instead of the 22-26 episodes per season there used to be to really flesh things out), i have simply decided to regard the show as fanfiction. anything goes in fanfic, and i really dont care about ooc-ness in fanfic, i dont give a fuck, i’ll read almost anything.
regarded as someone’s fanfic, the show is pretty good
as an adaptation, i am disapointed. it’s still good, just not great, as i was lead to belive by all the “rick is producer! it’s a faithful adaptation!” etc etc the advertising lead me to believe
wellp, cutting my rambling off with a TLDR: it’s not about gabe being “less abusive” in the show, it’s about the particular effects smelly gabe’s particular forms of abuse have on the characters and plot in the books, and that not being present in the show (so far)
have good day yall, i shall enjoy the fanfic that is this show <3
mr d is very funny in the show However. his first conversation with percy also just highlights how they've messed with the smelly gabe storyline in a way that is making me very nervous.
when percy met him in the lighting thief he immediately identified him as drunk adult = dangerous. a guy who would be sitting at gabe's poker game, saying nothing as percy is belittled and gabe demands his money. whether or not mr d would actually do that is irrelevant. it shows how percy is affected by gabe, that he hates him to the point that he would try to join the army or be homeless in new york before living alone with him after he thought his mom was dead. book percy would have had the joke conversation about dionysus being his dad and felt insanely betrayed that the kind sailor from sally's stories that he dreamed about had turned out to be someone just like smelly gabe.
but instead, gabe is just some guy. like he sucks but not to an extent that would drive them to kill him by the end of the season, at least not from what we've seen so far. talking to dionysus percy is just angry and confused about what's going on and upset by the loss of his mom, dionysus does not concern him at all. he is not especially upset by the idea of mr d being his dad except for his having ignored him up to this point.
like, the show is being kind of weird imo in terms of how the characters are reacting to the things that happen to them and having them react differently than they do in the books. and also we aren't in percy's head now the way we were in the books, and he often had very different internal vs external reactions to things in the books and i'm sure this would have been among them. but "can you help me find my father?" "actually i think i can... son. go get me a bottle of wine" would NOT have flown in tlt

Snotlout has the most development throughout all the franchise and im so so so grateful. Dreamworks gave us this little prick of a kid and said "actuallywe are going to make him so likeable". Httyd has always been on some kevel about defying expectation and exploration and Thawfest (although apparently people dont like it) is sooo interesting to me. I rant abt it so much literally they DID that. Snotlout could so easily have been the annoying, sarcy comedic relief but hes NOT!!! Thawfest comes around and you realise, this kids not even insecure, hes just scared. Hes scared of the dad who he clearly admires so much. and thats so interesting?????? And they reiderate time and time again that Spitelout is not going to get better. Everytime we see him its a back and forth, maybe this time we'll see him redeemed! it is a kids franchise, after all! and Although apparently in the end it isnt handled very well, for the most part, he doesnt get better. Snotlout learns the lesson that he can be whatever HE wants to be, and NOT what his dad wants him to be - and he forgets it. and thats so important to me. Its not cut and dry. its NEVER been cut and dry. Yes spitelout's a bad person, but Snotlout still loves him, he still admires him, he still pines for his attention. Theres never ONE moment where he cuts him off (although I would of liked to see a final moment where he does), its constant. Stoick apologised to Hiccup, they made ammends. But Spitelout is not Stoick, and they do not have to make up. Its so importsnt to me that httyd (for the most part) never made a statement that forgiveness is neccessary because theyre family. You can tell Snotlout does not like his dads company, but wants it when he doesnt have it. Hes a character that has so much more depth than you would expect for a dreamworks kids show and it all links back together. Hes a cocky bastard -> because his dad doesnt let him show weakness. He is neglective to hookfang -> because thats all he knows. He prioritises masculinity over health and safety -> because his dad says he has to. And he never fully grows out of it, either. He still glances to see if anyone catches him crying when hes 20. He still has a big mouth and flirts with anything that moves and freezes up when they flirt back. He still pines for the approval of people he considers to be above him, but he continues to be everything that his dad isnt.
And we're given this, a treat, by the people up at dreamworks. People who clearly care about the character they are presenting here. People that werent even necessarily at the time getting positive feedback from this character. And they said, "Now that hes likeable, lets make him relateable." And they gave us the Thor Bonecrusher episode. I will never get over mlm Snotlout Jorgenson. I have to take a step back and look at these characters Ive known for all my life to the point they feel as tangible as I am myself, and I get to say, "Hes just like me." Hes queer and its wonderful. like thats canon. And theres never a MOMENT where he gets made fun of for it in universe. they make fun of him for being a simp, sure, but never for liking men? It has its flaws of course, but I can never NOT gush about how lovely httyd is. they put so much care into all of their characters (except heather 420 blaze it no one cares anyway). Idk i just. they really did everything with Snotlout huh. <3
(TLDR its 1am and I watched Not Lout yesterday)
YESSSSS YOU SAID IT EXACTLY
He has such significant character development across so much time, like he starts out as this very insecure, cocky bully, and we get to see him change into a mature, caring leader and a good friend and it’s????? Totally believable?? We watch him go on this incredible journey and grow up so much. Even the episodes he doesn’t change in (like big man on berk) expand on the different sides of his character that we don’t always get to see. They have so much time to expand on him and let him grow and they do and I literally love him so much, he was handled so well in the shows.
(noooo bc I feel that)

how do u think hannibal woulda felt about the term "eat the rich?". Good because it's people eating people, or bad because he is the rich? would love to hear ur take on this
FUCK i love this question hsgdaj and i have indeed thought this through many times
unfortunately hannibal has no rights he’s an opulent capitalistic bitch and probably a landlord who definitely has unethical securities and uses offshore tax havens and commits extensive tax fraud every year. and all he does is kill service workers!!! service workers go through enough shit honestly give them a break. id be rude to a rich prick like hannibal if he came to my work TOO. and he’s in elitist circles he MUST see how insufferable other rich people are. plus rich people probably eat healthier because they have the resources for it so wouldn’t the meat be better? it’s not like he has a problem getting past security and leaving no evidence with his goddamn murder suit so how much harder can rich people be? hannibal is just THAT insufferable and pretentious himself with more cultural capital than any person should legally have so i think he only eats the rude, not the rich
BUT i like to think that Will could change his mind. this is a deleted line that fueled my socialist Will theory, along with knowing he was poor his entire childhood
Hannibal: Harboring a half-buried grudge against the rich?
Will: Aren’t we all?
as murder husbands hannibal would probably want to bring will to all these elite cultural activities and will would just absolutely hate everyone that’s there and while he’s working through his whole vigilante complex i BET that he’d have enough hatred for the rich that they would fit in his good-to-kill category cuz he can’t just search for serial killers every time han wants a snack. and if we think about it, the rich are indirectly responsible for many deaths so who’s the real killers we gotta look out for huh? will would totally continue to be a hypocrite with fucked up morals and use these excuses!
i dont even think hannibal would mope around much bc it’s worth it to see will in action and he doesnt give a fuck about them rlly, but he’d probably start annoying debates about it all the time. then will would drag him away from all the poor service workers who are just doin their best and would just happen to redistribute wealth and destroy corrupt assholes everywhere. it’s so much better than guillotining because at least you get some valuable resources (organs) out of it so the rich would not completely worthless!
this is also making me think about if will would even put up with the luxury or if he would make them compromise and keep his modest lifestyle. i think he’d also get a job even tho hannibal has enough to support them a million times over bc he’s like that. and hannibal would be like hiring workers to do maintenance at their house if like the fridge broke or smth and will would be like NO that’s a waste of money Let me get my tool box. anyway this has gone on far too long.
tldr hannibal does not eat the rich but will does and could convince him and i now crave a hannibal marxist au fic

TLDR at the bottom bc this entire post is kinda just repeating myself with different phrasing.
I mean, I literally agree with almost everything you just said. Nothing I said was to be a slight at the character, its just true. But just because it's true doesn't mean that I personally have to offer the same condolences I do to other characters. Especially when rutiles response to trauma is so different from other characters. The way a character responds to their trauma is a totally reasonable... reason to dislike them. You can be both a victim and a horrible person, half the characters have proven that. "Hurt people will hurt people" n all that.
Also the "we" I spoke of, I don't take that back. In some way, shape or form, everyone in this fandom is desensitised to someone's pain. We actively ignore the lunarians because we find their response unjustifiable, why are we acting like treating the gems the same is so wrong?
I wasn't saying that Rutile is a weak character, I was saying that their pain feels minimal compared to others, because Ichikawa has actively desensitised us to the gems trauma, not that Rutile is actually suffering less.
But to broadstroke those of us who don't like rutile as ppl who "don't get the nuance of their character" I promise you we do. Or atleast I do. But just because I understand, doesn't mean I am under any obligation to like them.
Their ugly raw falling apart didn't make me sympathise with them, because I, personally, can't find a single ok thing about the actions rutile has taken. With phos and dia, their actions have been against people who actively hurt them. I can understand revenge. But rutile is hurting an innocent person. Its not revenge, its just hurting someone to make yourself feel better. I just can't like a character who does that.
Also if pad had confronted them in the past, and rutiles STILL is behaving like that, I think I'd dislike them more. So good thing we don't know that for certain.
Also, It's like you just, actively ignored where I acknowledged rutiles depth and decided I was too stupid to comprehend that Rutile has any form of motivation to act the way they do. I see their pain, I understand their response, and I don't care. I dont think the pain justifies the response.
Rutiles a prick, and I don't feel as though they deserve the pity, especially because the victim in rutiles story is Padparadscha. The biggest victim of rutiles actions... Is padparadscha.
And it all came to mean nothing anyway, because they all became lunarians. 🎉
Really, it all comes down to what you can like in a character. The things you like about rutile are the very things that I find them horrid for. It says nothing about the character, and more about us, how we've responded to their actions.
Rutiles trauma. It's ugly, and it's real, but that's not any motivation for me or anyone else to consider them likeable.
TLDR : I am fully aware that Rutile has motivations, history and trauma that make sense of his actions, but i dont care, I think he sucks, still, and I dislike that people keep implying I'm some sort of dense idiot that "can't understand the intricacies of Hnk" for not extending sympathies to a character that I regard as one of the more unforgivable ones in HNK. You don't have to misunderstand a character to find them detestable, and if people keep telling me that I "just dont understand" I'm actually going to commit a form of arson. /j
